In the past 3 weeks since I bought a new Golf GTI, the car has singlehandedly reminded me why I love cars so much.

Before that day, I occasionally felt as if the flame of my passion was slowly dying out at times. I felt like I was approaching some sort of dead end. I was down to collecting 1/43 models and watching YouTube videos as my only automotive activities.

I can’t be more thankful for finding the right car to bring some excitement back into my life and to rekindle that flame. It puts an ear-to-ear smile on my face whenever I look at it, drive it, or even think about it. I worked my ass off to make it happen after graduation and did it. I know it’s not anything particularly special, but things are a lot nicer when you’ve worked for them on your own.

It may not be a Porsche, but I sleep better at night knowing it’s my new best friend, ready to accompany me on whatever adventure life takes me on.

Kinja'd!!!

If you can, make a dream come true. If it makes you anywhere near as happy as I am with this little GTI, you won’t regret it.

Here’s to many miles to come.

Congrats! Always a good choice to go w/the GTI. Also, it doesnt matter that its not a 911 or whatever. In the real world the GTI is more than fast enough.

That’s awesome—congratulations. Your post made me think of something I read the other day on Drive : “in the midst of the madness, however, I was reminded that a car is much more than a box on wheels, but a soulful machine that—albeit briefly—can make us forget about even our biggest sorrows.” A great car, whatever great means to you, is an amazing thing—find your love indeed.

I know exactly what you’re feeling. I previously had a 2014 Honda Accord Sport 6MT. It was a good car in its own right, but wasn’t exactly exciting, and didn’t inspire me to drive. I had a motorcycle (still do), which I relied on as the “fun” transportation, and it is a blast. However, riding time is limited, and was out of the question with family events or hauling the kid around. So I was in the same boat, mostly watching YouTube videos, going to dealerships to window shop, and getting excited anytime friends or family let me drive something marginally more enjoyable.

A bit over 2 years ago, I traded the Accord in for a 2018 Civic Si, and I still look forward to getting out and driving just for the sake of driving.  Just as you said, it’s not a Porsche or any other true sports car by any stretch, but it has enough sportiness to be fun during the daily drive.  The shifter is fantastic, steering feels good, handles very well, and in general is just a joy to be in.  I still like to watch YouTube videos and entertain all the other forms of automotive entertainment I always have, but I haven’t gone back to dealerships to windowship in over 2 years, and still haven’t even thought of trading this in for something new/better/different (which is extremely rare for me).  Maybe I’m just growing older and wiser?

Been there, done that, totally agree. Geronimo was one of my favorite vehicles I’ve ever owned.

Buy a $500 VW. Every day will be like rolling a D20!

Couldn’t agree more. From the rallyvan to the Ruckus, my vehicles put a smile on my face. Ripping through dirt and cones or pinning the throttle while the bike struggles to get to 45. Each provide their own nirvana in their own special way.

Hey congrats!!! It looks great in red! My mom has got a three pedal 19 SE in that silvery white color with the APR+ tune and it is O U T. It was a blast even before the tune as you obviously know.

Is your’s a 3 peddler or DSG?

7 speed huh? I want to say the one in my S3 was only 6, that sound right?

She is a hardened enthusiast. Spitfire, 124, MG, all in her early years. She had 3 z28 camaros leading up to my birth. A couple of SUVs then back at it. The GTI is her DD and shes got a 3 pedal C5 ragtop, headers back, and a short throw.

My dad is also an enthusiast but really lives through her and I these days. He’s been all over the place with cars the past 5 years or so.

That’s correct. The 7-speed is the newest iteration of the Mk7 DSG.
